My Filipino American Journey in Radio
October is Filipino American History Month, and I want to share a piece of that history through my own journey in music and radio.
People may know me as DJ Riddler, but being Filipino American is part of the story behind that name. Looking back at my career, I’m proud of the milestones I reached and what they can mean to someone coming up today.
From Texas to New York City
In 1994, I became the first Filipino American mixshow DJ on Top 40 radio at KTFM in San Antonio and KHFI in Austin.
For anyone unfamiliar with the role, a mixshow DJ blends records into a continuous set for a radio audience. The work involves choosing the music, connecting the songs, and creating an experience for listeners.
In 1996, my journey took me to Z100 in New York City, where I became the station’s first Filipino American mixshow DJ.
In 2000, I became the first Filipino American mixshow DJ on New York’s 103.5 KTU.
Those dates mark important chapters in my career. They also place a Filipino American behind the turntables at stations reaching audiences across Texas and New York.
A Moment I’ll Always Remember
One of my favorite memories came on June 5, 2011, when I performed and DJed with Karylle at the Philippine Independence Day parade celebration in New York City.
Being on that stage celebrating my culture was a moment I’ll always remember. It brought together two parts of my life: my work in music and my Filipino heritage.
That experience holds a special place in my story alongside the radio milestones.
Our History Includes the People Behind the Music
When we celebrate Filipino talent, we often think of the singers and performers we see onstage. Our history also includes the DJs, producers, radio professionals, and people behind the scenes helping shape what audiences hear.
Their contributions deserve to be remembered and shared. Filipino American History Month gives us a reason to tell those stories—including our own.
I’m proud that my career is part of that history. Sharing it is also a way to make that path visible to the next generation.
To the Next Generation
If you’re a young Filipino American DJ, producer, or artist, I hope my story helps you see a place for yourself in this industry.
Develop your craft. Learn the business. Build relationships. And celebrate the culture you bring with you.
My journey began in Texas radio and continued in New York City. Yours may take a completely different path. I look forward to seeing the stories you’ll add to our history.
Celebrate where you come from. Keep building where you want to go.
Happy Filipino American History Month. 🇵🇭
